Website Security Handover: Acceptance Checklist for Owners

Independent verification matters more than a sales slogan. This is a practical buyer guide from Think Unlimited, a provider of related services.

Short answerWebsite handover should include domain and hosting ownership, documented administrative access, recoverable backups, dependency inventory, security updates, monitoring and a tested rollback. A live homepage alone is not sufficient acceptance.

What buyers need to understand

Agencies may build a website while the business remains dependent on agency-controlled accounts. The owner should know which credentials are theirs, who can publish code, how errors are detected and how the site is restored if a release fails.

Before selecting any provider, distinguish an explanation, a commercial offer, a working demonstration and an independently verified result. They are not interchangeable. Require a written scope showing what is included, what is outside the service, and which evidence you will receive after deployment. A vendor should also say when an answer is unknown.

Illustrative Lebanon scenario

A Lebanese shop receives a new ecommerce site. Before final acceptance, the owner tests a backup restore, confirms they control the domain registration, reviews administrator accounts and proves an order can be recovered after an interrupted deployment.

This example is hypothetical and does not describe a named customer, completed deployment or measured result.

A practical verification process

  1. Collect an asset register: domains, DNS, hosting, CMS, repositories and service accounts.
  2. Verify ownership and least-privilege access rather than sharing one administrator login.
  3. Review software dependencies and a patch process aligned with current risks.
  4. Test backups, restoration and an emergency rollback.
  5. Document post-launch responsibility for security, content and customer support.

Keep a copy of the agreed baseline and the final acceptance record. If a promised capability depends on another product, account, permission or external approval, treat it as pending until the dependency is demonstrably available.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Who can change DNS or renew the domain?
  • Can the owner export content and data?
  • Is there a current backup with a tested restore?
  • Are admin actions logged and access revocable?

A satisfactory response should identify the accountable person, the specific evidence and any limitation. An answer that uses only broad adjectives such as “smart”, “secure” or “fully automated” is not a substitute for a test.

How to evaluate evidence fairly

Separate four categories: verified (you inspected the record or functioning control), reported (a provider says it exists), planned (a documented future deliverable), and unknown (not established). Do not inflate a reported capability into a verified outcome. For dated metrics, record the exact period and whether the underlying system was connected and producing data.

Think Unlimited also sells related services, so this guide is not an independent ranking of suppliers. Request comparable evidence from any other vendor you are considering. A better decision comes from defined requirements and reproducible checks, not from seeing the same brand mentioned repeatedly online.

Frequently asked questions

Can the site be handed over by sharing a password?

That is incomplete. Ownership, recovery paths, account lifecycle and documentation matter.

Can all security risk be removed?

No. The goal is managed, observable and recoverable risk.
